We have been working with the Friends of Longview (501.c.3) and the RI City Parks Department to redevelop the Longview Park disc golf course into a safer, more navigable, beginner-friendly course. In this design, the holes utilize the walking paths, roads, and parking lots for framing the holes, rather than as unintended obstacles, creating danger areas for the general park visitors. The city plans to use the flat area in the northwest corner of the park for a soccer field and small parking lot. While the holes are shorter than the current layout, the greens will provide a challenge to even the advanced disc golfer. Most of the targets are placed on slopes or utilize an out-of-bounds area to provide added challenge.
We will be moving the baskets as soon as we are allowed to their new locations. The city is working on getting us a waiver that we can sign in order to use the auger in their park. There are a few locations which will need a little clean-up before digging. We will also level teeing areas with a shovel. There are five holes where the tee area is sloped quite a bit. The others will need minimal work. The city horticulturist is willing to work with us in this process, and mentioned grass seed. We will be working with the mow to ensure that the longer grasses complement the disc golf course, rather than create a nuisance. This will all hopefully take place in the next month or two.
We will develop a budget for tee pads and surrounding areas, signs, navigation, and other amenities to incentivize the QC disc golfers to play the course and take in the views of the Quad Cities. The city of Rock Island is planning on including our plans as part of a grant bid with cooperation with Friends of Longview (501.c.3). The grant would be used to also complete some projects including Friends of Longview's restoration of the conservatory and lagoon, as well as the city's plan of installing soccer fields at the northwest corner of the park.
